Scotswood Housing Expo

Home » Residential » Scotswood Housing Expo

This winning competition entry attempts to define a ‘new housing norm’, focussed on economy, repetition and sustainability.  The competition asked designers to “redefine housing for the 21st century”.

The design was developed in collaboration with a manufacturer/contractor working at the forefront of off-site manufacturing and sustainable construction.  The resulting product was a highly adaptable housing solution that exceeded all current energy use requirements.  Following a ‘fabric first’ approach, it achieved Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 with a Code Level 6 external building envelope.  Although designed as part of a terraced scheme, it can be easily adapted to work with detached, semi-detached or multiple occupancy typologies.  Construction cost was confirmed at less than £1000/m2 with a delivery time of 22 weeks on a serviced plot.

The jury said:

“In consultation this was a popular scheme.  The public especially liked the bright and cheerful facades, and the variety of colours and materials. This was a good response to the brief, giving an active and animated addition to the streetscape.”
