This proposal creates a clear, practical layout for much needed family housing, making the best of the site’s challenging trapezoidal geometry. Two distinct terraces provide a total of seven 3-storey family dwellings, all with front and rear gardens and sizeable balconies on the upper levels. The existing locally-listed pub with its dedicated parking area has been retained.
The design is robust and attractive, with simple but visually interesting forms and materials. A light-coloured stock brick on the front terrace is complimented by decorative brickwork on the external walls. Slightly darker brick is used for the back terrace. Inset walls at roof level are clad in coloured tiles to bring lively, reflective surfaces to the generous outdoor amenity spaces.
Walls above the first floor level are clad with light zinc panels, separated from the brick surfaces below by a pronounced shadow gap. The use of zinc on these walls and on the shallow, mono-pitched roofs creates a continuous visual element that helps modulate the massing.
Careful composition of windows within the volumes ensures that all houses receive good levels of natural daylight, while simultaneously eliminating direct overlooking.
