An astute assessment of the boundary conditions and topographical advantages presented by this site at the former Foxwood Centre informed a proposal for a resilient, multi-generational mix of housing types comprising family-oriented townhouses fronting Ridgeway Road and two blocks of modular volumetric 1- and 2-bedroom retirement living flats facing onto a linear Central Garden. A shared amenity building is located to the north.
Car parking is hidden within an undercroft structure, accessed at street level, which uses existing level changes to minimise excavation: the car park roof supports the backs of the townhouses and the Central Garden above.
A key consideration was future connectivity, with the Army Reserve Centre to the east seen as a site of potential expansion.
Providing a sense of enclosure, maximising greenery and facilitating photovoltaic generation were driving concerns, guiding the composition of plan, section and architectural form.
