This vision for the Gallions Quarter, a strategic brownfield site within the LDA’s Royal Albert Basin Masterplan, focussed on three key placemaking principles:
1) The smart urban block;
2) Interlinked public spaces, and;
3) Towers as ‘beacons’.
The design was developed in collaboration with Alison Brooks Architects and explored the complex problem of balancing diversity and coherence, both at the scale of the development as a whole (700 homes, 3000m2 commercial space) and at the scale of the urban block using three different block typologies – the linear block, the perimeter block and the point block.
Consideration of the spaces between buildings was a primary concern and landscaping was essential to the development of strategies for flood risk mitigation, car parking, wayfinding, and demarcation of public and private amenity spaces.
